Meals

When it comes to Rio, it’s not just about the BJJ—it's about the food too! Get ready to experience the best of Brazil's culinary scene through my eyes. I've handpicked top-notch restaurants, from Michelin-rated gems to local favorites that have been close to my heart since childhood to now. You'll taste authentic Brazilian dishes that will transport you to the heart of our culture. Each day will be a new opportunity to savor the flavors of Brazil at some of the most exclusive dining spots in the country.

BRAZILIAN BARBECUE: Discover the unique flavors of Brazilian barbecue, where the experience is incomparable to anything you've tried before. Enjoying the most tender, flavorful, and exclusive selections that make Brazilian barbecue truly special and even be able to try cuts of meat that are only available in Brazil. *Vegetarian friends will find a diverse array of options at the extensive salad bars available at restaurants. Rice and black beans will also be available.

SUSHI: Fish is a beloved staple in Brazilian cuisine, and after visiting over 70 countries, Brazilian sushi remains my top pick as it is known for its creativity and unexpected flavor combinations. Non-fish eaters will also have a variety of options to explore such as vegan/ vegetarian sushi and more.

SEAFOOD: When it comes to seafood, the flavors and freshness of the ocean come together in a way that is uniquely Brazilian. From exotic Amazonian fish to traditional coastal delicacies, you'll taste seafood dishes that capture the essence of Brazil's diverse culinary landscape. Whether you're a seafood enthusiast or prefer non-fish options, there will be a range of dishes to satisfy every palate.

PIZZA: Brazil boasts some of the best pizzas in the world. Instead of fancy restaurants, we'll be diving into the all-you-can-eat pizza experience, including my personal favorite: various chocolate and dessert pizzas! Whether you're a pizza connoisseur or just looking to try something new, the Brazilian pizza experience will be a memorable and delicious journey.

BRAZILIAN FOOD: There will be an abundance of traditional Brazilian food to enjoy, with a wide variety of options from pure Brazilian cuisine to unique fusions like Brazilian-French, Brazilian-Italian, Brazilian-Greek, and more, you'll have the opportunity to savor a diverse range during the trip to get a real sense for Brazilian flavor.

ACAI AND NATURAL JUICES: In Rio, natural juice shops are on every block, offering fresh and invigorating beverages made from ripe, natural fruits. As a beach town, Rio has perfected the art of crafting refreshing drinks to cool down under the sun. Açaí is a great example of this, a highly caloric and satisfying smoothie with unmatched freshness and flavor, and it is nothing like the American version. Comparing Açaí in Rio to Açaí in America is like comparing the taste of yogurt with ice cream – and who would choose yogurt over ice cream, right? (LOL). Enjoy unlimited servings of fresh juices and Açaí during your training sessions, enhancing your experience at the camp.

Caio Terra: Jiu Jitsu World Champion and Innovator

Caio Terra is a renowned Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and one of the most accomplished athletes in the sport, celebrated for his success in both Gi and No-Gi competitions. Born on February 8, 1986, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Terra began his jiu jitsu journey at the age of 16. Despite starting later than many of his peers, he quickly ascended through the ranks under the mentorship of Paulo Maurício Strauch, thanks to his dedication and exceptional technical skill.

Terra has claimed multiple IBJJF World Championships, Pan American titles, and victories at other prestigious events, earning his place among the legends of jiu jitsu. Known for his precision and adaptability, especially in the lighter weight divisions, he has become a dominant force on the mat. His influence is particularly significant in the No-Gi arena, where he has pioneered modern techniques and captured world championships, solidifying his reputation as an innovator in the sport.

Beyond his competitive achievements, Caio Terra is a respected coach and mentor. He founded the Caio Terra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association, through which he shares his deep knowledge and passion for the art with students worldwide. Terra’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the supremacy of technique over strength, a principle that has guided countless practitioners to improve their skills and understanding of jiu jitsu.

Caio Terra’s impact extends far beyond his own accomplishments. He is a visionary who continues to advocate for the growth and evolution of jiu jitsu, making the sport more accessible and inspiring a new generation of athletes. His contributions, both on and off the mat, have left an indelible mark on the global jiu jitsu community.

FAQ's

DO I NEED TO BE PART OF CTA?

No, you do not need to be a part of CTA (Caio Terra Association) to join our retreat. We welcome participants from every team!

ARE THERE BELT OR SKILL REQUIREMENTS?

No! From beginners to black belts, everyone is welcome and will have a good time!

DO I NEED TO TRAIN BJJ TO JOIN?

No, everyone is welcome to join our retreat. In the past, we have had individuals join our retreats who have not previously trained in BJJ. It is common for participants to bring along their spouses or friends, and interestingly, non-practitioners often find themselves enjoying the retreat just as much, if not more, than those who train regularly as they are less tired!!

When I say that jiujitsu with me is just a bonus, it truly is. People are always remembering the moments we spent in previous retreat, constantly telling me how they dreamt of a specific meal that they had in Rio, and talking to people that they met years ago during other retreat. Although I will teach seminar material classes, jiujitsu is rarely what people end up talking about afterwards.

DO I NEED TO GET IN SHAPE TO DO THIS?

No, our retreat is designed as an all-inclusive vacation experience rather than a training retreat. While BJJ activities are available daily, you have the freedom to choose when and how much you want to train. There is no pressure to roll; however, for those who do wish to roll, there will be ample opportunities to train with experienced practitioners, including Brazilian instructors and me.

WHO IS THIS RETREAT FOR?

This retreat is ideal for anyone looking to experience Rio and Brazil through a local's perspective. As a native of Rio de Janeiro, I will be your main guide throughout this adventure. You can expect an insider's view of the city, with visits to the best and most exclusive spots at the best times. Your vacation will be meticulously planned, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the experience from morning until 10 pm daily. Safety is a top priority, and military police members will accompany the group when necessary, ensuring access to unique and secure locations.

What makes this retreat truly special and one of the best times of your life in my opinion are a few factors: some of the best food you have ever eaten (and best tasting fresh natural juices), everyday; some of the most beautiful views you will ever see, that is not justify in any pictures and why people say that Rio has a special place in their heart and memories;  And finally the bonding you will make with other participants and with Brazilians that you will meet along the way, making lifetime friendships while discovering such a welcoming culture.

GI OR NO GI?

Our retreat offers a blend of both Gi and NoGi training sessions. While most Jiu-Jitsu schools in Rio primarily focus on Gi training, our exclusive classes with me will incorporate a mix of Gi and NoGi techniques. You are welcome to train in NoGi attire during Gi classes.

HOW MANY RETREATS HAVE YOU HOSTED?

The Rio retreat has been held five times in the past. We have hosted numerous retreats worldwide, with the Rio retreat being the favorite. The first Rio retreat was hosted in 2016.

CAN WE CREATE CUSTOM ITINERARY OR OPT OUT OF CERTAIN ONES?

While our retreat offers a curated itinerary designed to showcase the best of Rio, we understand that individual preferences may vary. We strive to accommodate participants' needs and preferences to the best of our ability. If there are specific activities you'd like to participate in or opt-out of, please let us know, and we'll do our best to accommodate your request.

IF I DONT WANT TO TRAIN BJJ WHAT CAN I DO DURING TRAINING TIME?

There are plenty of activities and amenities available at the hotel to keep you entertained and relaxed. The hotel offers a wide range of amenities, including beach services, a fitness center, a rooftop infinity pool, hot tub, and sauna and steam room. You are more than welcome to take advantage of these facilities during training sessions.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING

In preparation for the retreat, our team will send you a list of things to bring as well as instruction material with an itinerary and what to expect during the retreat. We also advise participants to travel with international health coverage.

IS THE RIO RETREAT ANNUALLY?

No, the next Rio retreat is not scheduled to take place before 2026. The Rio retreat is not an annual event. Due to the extensive planning and resources required, there is typically a 2-to-3-year gap between retreats.

DO NON JIU-JITSU PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE A DISCOUNT

No discounts are available for non-Jiu-Jitsu participants, as the cost of the retreat encompasses a comprehensive experience and the BJJ is simply a complimentary bonus.

Considering the individual costs of such a trip without Jiu-Jitsu training, participants are receiving a valuable package that ensures a memorable and hassle-free experience.

It's important to note that the current cost is as low as it can be, considering everything included in the retreat package. Here's a breakdown of what the daily rate of approximately $300 (for 8 days & 7 nights) includes:

  • Accommodation in a 5-star hotel in one of Brazil's most exclusive areas featuring frontage on the famous Copacabana Beach with amenities such as: rooftop infinity pool and spa, fitness center, 5-star restaurant, sauna and steam room, bars and event rooms, 24/hr concierge.
  • Dining experiences in Rio's best restaurants, including Michelin-star establishments, with fresh natural juices and açaí available all day.
  • Entrance fees and guided tours to daily sightseeing activities and attractions.
  • Professional security ensuring your safety.
  • Transportation throughout your stay, from your arrival to departure.

Moreover, our retreat takes a safety-first approach. Over five successful iterations, we've maintained an impeccable safety record with no accidents. Investing more ensures your safety and well-being. While the location may command a higher price, it significantly reduces the likelihood of incidents. We provide professional security during outings and offer advice to mitigate risks when traveling alone.

Food safety is paramount, especially in Brazil. We dine exclusively at reputable establishments adhering to American standards of food preparation and hygiene. Our commitment to quality extends beyond accommodation and dining to create a memorable and worry-free experience.

While other Jiu-Jitsu retreats in the past may have offered lower prices, most of which no longer exist due to safety incidents due to compromises are made in location, dining options, and safety protocols, my aim is to offer the best of Rio without compromising on quality or safety, ensuring you enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

We considered the option of opting for cheaper accommodation, but ultimately prioritized your safety and comfort. Staying in one of Brazil's most exclusive areas not only enhances your overall experience but also provides peace of mind knowing that you are in a secure environment.

CAN WE ARRIVE EARLIER OR STAY LATER AFTER THE RETREAT?

Although we have additional options for early arrival and late departure and we offer flexible pick-up from and to the airport, we don’t suggest being in Rio on your own.

Over five successful retreats, we've maintained a safety record with no accidents. However, incidents have occurred with participants coming to Brazil early before the retreat or staying longer after the retreat, therefore we advise against it. Incidents include: robberies of cameras, phones, cash, and travel documents as well as food poisoning incidents. Those hospitalized were not able to attend the retreat, however we were able to help in retrieving travel documents.

IS THERE ANY AGE REQUIREMENT?

No there are no age requirements. Participants under the age of 18 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A LEGAL GUARDIAN.

WHAT COSTS ARE NOT COVERED BY THE RETREAT?

A couple of common costs that will not be covered are but are not limited to:

  • Airfare.
  • Visa (if required).
  • Any alcoholic beverages.
  • Extra services such as laundry as we can not be responsible for items not returned or picked-up.
  • Lost items

The hotel has 24/hr concierge that can help you find services you need, our team will also always be available to help you find the best options to cater to your needs. Examples are: laundry services, massage outside of the hotel spa, souvenir shops, late-night dining options, etc.

WHAT IF I HAVE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS?
