I will be traveling for the retreat. If I choose to stick around, can I extend my stay?

Tobago has a lot to offer with beautiful beaches, amazing food, hikes, waterfalls and so much more. You are encouraged to travel in advance or stay on after the retreat is over. However, please note the package only covers accommodation for the days specified for the retreat. You will have to provide your own accommodation at any of the various hotels and resorts on the island if you choose to arrive early or stay on after the retreat is over.

What should I travel with?

For Training: It is recommended to travel with sufficient gear for training. Depending on the camp, two Gis as well as some No-Gi gear for training. There are laundry services located at the resort as well. Although, due to the high frequency of laundry request during the retreat, it won’t hurt to pack a few extra pieces of gear in case.

For Leisure: Tobago boasts a warm, tropical, marine climate, with constant cool breezes from NE trade winds and year-round temperatures ranging from 23°C (73°F) to 32°C (89°F) so travel with swim wear as well as shorts and flip flops/sandals for hanging around the island and a pair of sneakers/trainers for hikes and other activities.

How easy is it to travel to Tobago?

Tobago is the smaller of the two islands that make up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago with Trinidad being the main island.

If you are traveling from North America, there are direct flights to Trinidad (Piarco International Airport) from Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, New York, Houston and Toronto using Caribbean Airlines, JetBlue, American Airlines or United Airlines.

If you are traveling from across the Atlantic, There are direct flights to Trinidad and even Tobago (on some days) from London and Amsterdam using KLM Airlines or British Airways.

When you land in Trinidad, getting to Tobago is easy. There are two options.

Using Caribbean Airlines (www.caribbean-airlines.com) there are jumper planes that fly back and forth to the islands all day that cost around USD$50 for a round trip. The flight is 15 minutes from take-off to landing.

There is also a ferry service that runs back and forth, usually twice pre day. Using (www.ttitferry.com) the cost is around USD$10 per leg. The ferry sailing is 3 hours port to port. However, It is recommended to use the jumper plane in place of the ferry as the crossing can be rough during certain times of the year. You will also have to find transport from the airport to the ferry terminal that would add to the expense of the trip.

For flights from the Trinidad airport to Tobago, they usually open up for booking 3 months in advance and the ferry service usually allows you to book online about 1 month in advance.

Once you get to Tobago, there are many taxi services that can take you directly to the resort from the airport. The taxi service is around TT$100 (USD$15).

What is the local currency in Tobago?

The national currency used is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar, TT Dollar or TTD. It floats against the US Dollar at an average of TT$6.80 to US$1.00, however you can check with any bank online or the daily newspaper for the current rate.

Credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard) are widely accepted, but carrying some cash is advisable since some smaller facilities and shops accept cash only. For cash transactions, businesses and individuals may accept US dollars.

You can also change your foreign currency to the local currency at the Piarco International Airport in Trinidad upon arrival using the various cambios before departing to Tobago.

I am traveling with a group for the retreat. Are there any group rates for multiple people wanting to share a room?

There is a ‘shared room’ package available. It is recommended that each person from your group purchase a shared room package separately. After you have made your purchase, you can inform us via email with the names of the participants in the group and you will be paired up. The max participants per room is two (2). You will notice that you will save significantly on accommodation if you choose to share a room.

I am traveling with a friend. Can they jump in on a session as a guest?

Unfortunately, walk-on sessions cannot be accommodated. Mat space is reserved for the participants that have purchased a package that covers their training fee. This is important to us to not only provide the best experience possible for our Jiu-Jitsu brothers and sisters, but also to cover the expenses incurred in putting together the retreat.

Will I need transportation while I'm at the retreat?

Once you arrive at the resort, basically everything you require will be available, including the training facility. There will be a few activities that are scheduled to add to the experience of the retreat, and transportation for that will be taken care of. However, if you choose to rent a car to venture off on your own, there are many car rental services available on the island or you can book a taxi at the resort receptionist.

Am I expected to stay at the resort between training sessions?

Not at all. You are encouraged to explore the island during your time off. We will try to organize group outings for different days, but feel free to do your own thing as well. Want to chill at the beach instead of going on a hike? It’s completely up to you how you choose to spend your free time.

How are the training sessions structured?

Each camp varies. Training schedules are listed under each camp’s description. Our goal is to provide you with the best quality training and sufficient mat time during your stay at the retreat.

Feel free to stick around the mats afterwards to continue training if you wish.

What to do in case of a medical emergency?

In the event of an emergency, the Scarborough General Hospital is in Signal Hill (about 20 minutes from the resort) and there are a number of health centers across the island.

Emergency health treatment is free to residents and visitors at all public health facilities; private health facilities often require payment upfront. Follow up with your travel insurance provider for further details on coverage.

Can I transfer my package to someone?

You can transfer your package to another athlete by sending a written request via email to the organizer who will need to approve it. There is an administrative fee of USD$50 for this process that must be paid to receive the final confirmation.

See our Terms & Conditions

What is your cancellation policy?
